How Much Does DPF Cleaning Cost? Cleaning vs Regeneration vs A New DPF
By Wojtek Kujawski, Voytech Tuning ·
The short answer
In the UK a forced DPF regeneration costs around £100 to £250 and a specialist DPF clean £200 to £500, according to the RAC. A replacement filter costs from about £800 to over £4,000 depending on the car. Voytech Tuning's mobile DPF cleaning starts from £195, with diagnostics and a recheck included.

DPF Cleaning Cost At A Glance
Published UK prices vary a lot, partly because different sources mean different jobs by the word cleaning. This table puts the main public figures side by side. They are averages and ranges, not quotes for your car.
| Option | What It Involves | Typical UK Price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forced regeneration | A diagnostic tool tells the engine to burn the soot | £100 to £250 | RAC, September 2026 |
| Professional DPF clean | Cleaning the filter, usually on the car | Average £188.30 | WhoCanFixMyCar data quoted by the RAC, September 2026 |
| Specialist DPF cleaning | Specialist cleaning services | £200 to £500 | RAC, September 2026 |
| Cleaning and regeneration | Garage job booked through a comparison site | Average £300, range £160 to £500 | ClickMechanic price guide |
| New DPF | Replacing the filter | £800 to over £4,000 | RAC, September 2026 |
| New DPF | Replacing the filter | At least £1,000 plus labour | The AA |
What DPF Cleaning Costs In Liverpool and Manchester
ClickMechanic publishes average prices for DPF cleaning and regeneration by city. Its figures are £230 for Liverpool and £229 for Manchester, close to Birmingham (£203) and London (£205) and well below Bristol (£335). Its averages by make also show a wide spread, from £105 for Honda to £313 for Audi.
Voytech Tuning's mobile DPF cleaning starts from £195 (from £225 in Manchester, the Greater Manchester towns east of Wigan and Leigh, and Blackpool). The final price depends on the vehicle and the location, and we give an accurate quote once we have your registration and postcode. The from-price includes the full DPF system scan and health check before the clean and a recheck of the readings afterwards, so the diagnostics are not an extra line on the bill.
What Changes The Price Of A DPF Clean
- The vehicle. Filter size, where it sits and how the engine manages regeneration all vary by make and model, which is why the ClickMechanic averages differ by more than £200 between makes.
- How blocked the filter is. A filter that is only high on soot is a different job from one that has stopped regenerating completely and put the car in limp mode.
- Ash. The AA says ash cannot be removed unless the filter comes off the car and goes away for specialist cleaning. A heavily ashed filter may need that deeper clean or a replacement, both of which cost more.
- Other faults. A failed temperature sensor, pressure sensor, EGR fault or AdBlue problem is a separate repair with its own cost. A clean without fixing it wastes money.
- Location and labour. ClickMechanic quotes garage labour at £50 to £100 an hour in London against £35 to £50 in lower-demand towns.
- Whether diagnostics are included. Some prices are for the clean alone, with the fault check charged on top. Ask before you book.
Cleaning vs Forced Regeneration: Which Is Cheaper In The End?
A forced regeneration can be the cheapest fix when the only problem is soot and the car's system is healthy. It burns the soot using the car's own equipment. It does not help when a sensor or other fault stopped the normal regenerations, because the filter will fill again, and it does nothing for ash, which DieselNet describes as the incombustible material left behind after regeneration.
A professional clean uses a cleaning process to break down deposits and reduce restriction in the filter. It may be the better choice where regeneration alone is not enough. Neither is worth paying for until someone has checked why the filter blocked, which is why every Voytech Tuning visit starts with diagnostics.
Is DPF Cleaning Worth It Compared With A New Filter?
On price alone, yes, where the filter can be saved. At a £188 to £300 average against £800 to £4,000 for a new part, a clean costs a fraction of replacement. The AA says a DPF on a car used properly should last well over 100,000 miles, so many blocked filters are not worn out, only neglected or let down by a fault.
A clean is not always the answer. On a 2021 Ford Kuga in St Helens with 30,000 miles, the diagnosis found AdBlue crystals around the injector blocking the pressure sensor pipes. The owner's choice was a new filter or a deep machine clean, not a quick on-car job. Diagnostics are there to catch that before anyone pays for the wrong job. Voytech Tuning does not sell or fit replacement filters.
Costs To Avoid
Some spending on a blocked DPF buys nothing. Clearing the warning light with a code reader costs little but leaves the soot in place. Repeated forced regenerations on a car with a faulty sensor pay for the same job again every few weeks.
Removing the filter from a road car is the most expensive shortcut of all. It is an MOT major defect, and the RAC notes fines of up to £1,000 for a car and £2,500 for a van. Some cars also use a fuel additive (Eolys) for the DPF, which the AA puts at around £200 for fluid and labour when it needs topping up; that is a service cost, not a cleaning cost, and is worth checking in your service book.
