Emissions systems: AdBlue and SCR

AdBlue Delete and NOx Sensor Delete Remapping

AdBlue warning on, a NOx sensor fault or the “no engine start” countdown running? An AdBlue delete (AdBlue removal) remap switches the AdBlue (SCR) system off in the engine software and clears the related fault codes. Done at your location across Liverpool, Manchester and the North West, from £285.

DPF, EGR and AdBlue deletes are for off-road, competition, agricultural and export vehicles. Removing or disabling emissions equipment on a vehicle used on UK public roads breaks the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, and any modification must be declared to your insurer. The decision is the owner's.

What the AdBlue system does

What Is The AdBlue (SCR) System?

The AdBlue system, also called the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, cuts nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from a diesel engine. It injects a urea solution, AdBlue, into the hot exhaust, where it turns into ammonia and reacts with the NOx in the SCR catalyst, leaving nitrogen and water vapour.

NOx sensors before and after the catalyst tell the engine computer whether it is working. It is fitted to most Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesels: cars, vans, trucks and agricultural machinery. When any part of it reports a fault, the engine computer can reduce power and start a countdown to a no-start.

Signs of an AdBlue or NOx sensor fault

  • "AdBlue system fault" or "No engine start in X miles" message
  • The vehicle refuses to start once the countdown reaches zero
  • NOx sensor fault codes
  • AdBlue used faster than usual
  • Crystals in the injector or the tank
  • Engine management light that stays on
  • Loss of power or limp mode

What Does An AdBlue Delete Remap Do?

An AdBlue delete remap, also called an SCR delete, a NOx delete or a NOx sensor remap, changes the engine computer's software so it no longer runs the AdBlue (SCR) system or monitors the NOx sensors, and the related fault codes, the warning and the countdown are cleared. It is a software job, done with the vehicle where it is parked.

It is usually chosen to stop the problems these systems cause:

  • Downtime and repair bills from AdBlue injector, pump and NOx sensor failures
  • Power cuts, no-start conditions and dashboard warnings
  • Off-road use: agricultural machinery, construction equipment, competition and other non-road vehicles

We do not diagnose, clean or repair AdBlue systems or NOx sensors: if you want the system repaired, a dealer or an AdBlue specialist is the right call. Our AdBlue work is the delete remap. We also do DPF delete and EGR delete remaps, and can do them in the same visit.

The law, the MOT and insurance

An AdBlue delete is for vehicles that are not used on UK roads: off-road, competition, agricultural and export vehicles. A road vehicle has to keep the emissions equipment it was approved with, and removing or disabling it can bring a fine and invalidate the insurance. The details, with the sources, are in our guide to deletes, the MOT and the law.

Questions

AdBlue Delete Questions

What Does "No Engine Start In X Miles" Mean?

It is the AdBlue system's countdown. When the system detects a fault it limits how far you can drive, and once the counter reaches zero the engine will not start again. It usually follows a NOx sensor fault, an AdBlue pump or injector problem, or crystallised AdBlue.

What Is AdBlue Remapping?

Another name for an AdBlue delete: the engine computer is remapped so it no longer runs the AdBlue (SCR) system or monitors the NOx sensors, and the related faults, warning and countdown are cleared.

Can You Delete A NOx Sensor?

Yes, as part of the AdBlue delete remap: the engine computer stops monitoring the NOx sensors along with the rest of the SCR system, and the NOx sensor fault codes are cleared.

What Are The Signs Of A NOx Sensor Fault?

An AdBlue or emissions warning on the dashboard, the engine management light, NOx sensor fault codes, AdBlue being used faster than usual, and on many vehicles the no-start countdown.

Is An AdBlue Delete Legal?

Only for off-road, competition, agricultural and export vehicles, as set out in the note at the top of this page.

Will A Vehicle With The AdBlue Deleted Pass The MOT?

A delete is for vehicles that are not used on UK roads, so the MOT is not the aim. A road vehicle has to keep its AdBlue (SCR) system, which is part of the emissions equipment it was approved with.

Can You Delete The AdBlue and Leave The DPF Alone?

Yes. They are separate systems in the exhaust and in the engine software, so an AdBlue delete does not touch the DPF. If the DPF is blocked as well, it can be cleaned in the same visit.

Can You Remove AdBlue From My Van Or Car?

Yes, for off-road, competition, agricultural and export vehicles. An AdBlue delete remap disables the AdBlue (SCR) system in the engine software, so there is no kit to fit. From £285, quoted from the registration.

Can You Clean Or Repair A NOx Sensor?

No. We do not clean or repair NOx sensors or any part of the AdBlue system. The NOx sensor delete is a software change, done as part of the AdBlue delete remap for off-road use.

How Much Is An AdBlue Delete?

From £285. The exact price depends on the vehicle, so send the registration and we confirm it before booking.
