How Long Does DPF Cleaning Take?
By Wojtek Kujawski, Voytech Tuning ·
The short answer
A mobile DPF clean from Voytech Tuning takes 45 to 60 minutes on site on average, including diagnostics before the clean and a recheck after it. A prompted regeneration drive takes 15 to 25 minutes, while a forced regeneration can run up to 40 minutes. Extra faults or a heavily loaded filter add time.

Mobile, at your home or work across Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

The Short Answer: 45 To 60 Minutes On Site
Our average time on site for a mobile DPF clean is 45 to 60 minutes. That is the whole visit, not only the cleaning: it covers reading the fault codes and live data first, the clean itself, and checking the readings again afterwards. The work is done where the car is, on your drive, on the street outside or in a work car park, so you are not dropping the car at a garage and waiting for a call.
Same-day bookings are available, subject to availability. Our hours are Monday to Friday from 7am to 9pm, Saturday from 7am to 6pm and Sunday from 7am to 2pm, so for many people the clean fits before work, after work or at the weekend.
What Happens In Those 45 To 60 Minutes
Every visit follows the same five steps, in this order. The diagnostics come first because a blocked filter is often the result of another fault, and cleaning a filter that will block again next week is money wasted.
- Diagnose. Scan the car, read the DPF-related fault codes and look for faults that stop the filter regenerating.
- Assess. Check the filter's restriction, the pressure and soot readings, and the sensors, including the differential pressure sensor and the exhaust temperature sensors, to decide whether a clean is the right fix.
- Clean. Where a clean is appropriate, a high-pressure chemical clean breaks down the deposits built up inside the filter.
- Recheck. Read the figures again after the clean to see what it achieved.
- Advise. Explain what we found, including any fault that needs a separate repair to stop the filter blocking again.
How DPF Cleaning Time Compares With The Alternatives
The options for a blocked DPF take different amounts of time. These figures come from manufacturers' handbooks and the AA, and from our own visits for the mobile clean.
- A regeneration drive is quicker, but only works when the system is healthy and the problem is soot alone.
- The AA says ash can only be removed with the filter off the car and sent for specialist cleaning, which means more time off the road.
| Option | Typical Time | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Active regeneration (car does it itself) | 5 to 10 minutes of driving | The AA |
| Regeneration drive after a warning light | 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the make | Volkswagen, Ford and Vauxhall handbooks and owner guidance |
| Forced or manual regeneration | Up to 40 minutes | Ford Transit Custom handbook |
| Mobile DPF clean with diagnostics and recheck | 45 to 60 minutes on site on average | Voytech Tuning |
| Off-car specialist clean | Longer, as the filter has to come off the car and be sent away | The AA |
What Can Make A DPF Clean Take Longer
The 45 to 60 minutes is an average. Some jobs run over, and it is usually for one of these reasons:
- A heavily loaded filter. On a Mercedes Sprinter van in St Helens the soot load had reached 120% and the van was in limp mode. A filter in that state needs more work than one caught at the first warning light.
- More than one fault. On the same Sprinter, two of the three exhaust temperature sensors had stopped working. Finding and explaining a second fault takes time, and the diagnosis matters as much as the clean.
- A problem that is not soot. On a 2021 Ford Kuga with 30,000 miles, the diagnosis found AdBlue crystals around the injector blocking the pressure sensor pipes. That changed the job: the owner's options were a new filter or a deep machine clean.
- Vehicle layout. Access to the filter and its sensors differs between cars and vans, and some take longer to reach.
Can You Drive Straight After A DPF Clean?
The recheck is done before we leave, so you know the result before you drive. After that, the car can go back to normal use. What keeps it clear in the weeks after is the driving pattern and fixing any fault we found. The RAC says passive regeneration needs a good 30 to 50 minute run at sustained speed on a motorway or A-road, so a car that only does short local trips benefits from a longer run every week or two.
If the advice at the end of the visit includes a separate repair, such as a failed sensor, book it soon. The Sprinter owner booked the sensors in for the next day. Voytech Tuning does not diagnose, clean or repair EGR or AdBlue systems. If a sensor is stopping the DPF regenerating, the diagnostics show it and you have it replaced; we clean the filter.
How To Make The Visit Quicker
- Tell us the registration, the postcode and the symptoms when you book: which lights are on, any messages, and whether the car is in limp mode.
- Park where there is room to open the bonnet and work safely: a drive, a quiet street or a car park space.
- Have the keys ready and let us know if the car has been to a garage for the same problem, and what they did.
